Street Drama through local students; Harisiddhi and Thaiba VDC

Centre for Integrated Urban Development in coordination with the local school students and with the financial support from World Vision International Nepal, ADP Lalitpur organized street Drama in Harissiddhi and Thaiba on 5th Dec 2009. The aim of the drama is to spread public awareness on sanitation issues in community through capacity building of local students. Students from Harisiddhi Higher Secondary school of Harisiddhi and Pulchowki Higher Secondary school of Thaiba were selected and trained by the professional artist from Youth Front Nepal. Community people gathered around to enjoy the drama. There was interaction between participants and artists at the end of the drama which was very effective. The drama circulated the sanitation related messages to the community. The drama will be conducted in other VDCs in future.

  Cleaning Campaign organized by local initiative

On the occasion of local festival, “Sath Gayule Jatra” cleaning campaign was organized in Machhegaun VDC on 25th Nov 2009. The festival is celebrated in seven villages including Machhegaun. Students from local schools and people from community participated in the campaign. Dhoka Tole, Machhenarayan Temple area and Bishnunarayan Tole as well as Sakhawaha Tole were focused on the campaign. Machhegaun Environment Improvement Committee and Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) supported for the campaign.

  Cleaning Campaign and Sanitation Exhibition in Nala, Kavre

Centre for Integrated Urban Development and Nala Integrated Development Committee Nala jointly organized Cleaning Campaign and Sanitation Exhibition at Nala, Kavre on 28th Nov 2009 in coordination with local community. Cleaning Campaign was started early seven in the morning with the active participation of women, youth, children and elderly people. They not only cleaned the surrounding road, chowk, temples but also cleaned the nearby water sources. The campaign was successful and the surrounding environment has changed remarkably which makes the community people realize the importance of this type of campaign and eager to clean their surrounding area in weekly basis. Sanitation Exhibition was second phase of the programme which began from 11 a.m. at Wolachhe Tole of Nala. In the exhibition there was display of different traditional as well as modern sanitation tools and materials such as ECOSAN toilets model, Waste water management system, solid waste management system etc. Similarly the traditional tools used for sanitation purpose such as broom, shovel, feaces and urine collection pot etc were also displayed. The modern technology for preparing compost from the compost bin was demonstrated with the flex in which the methodology of how to make compost was shown. The compost prepared from the bin was also displayed on that day. Different ways of water treatment for drinking purpose were displayed through flex. Piyush, a chlorine solution was promoted on that day by selling it in subsidized cost to the local community. The local hand made products from the recyclable waste such as plastics, agricultural remaining was attraction of the exhibition. A Struvite reactor which converts urine into powder form of urine (struvite) drew attention of the local people. Guests from the UNHABITAT and EAWAG/SANDEC expressed that they were highly impressed by the exhibition. Most of the local residents of the Nala and the surrounding area visited the exhibition. The local denizens were very glad to have this type of exhibition in their village which enhanced their knowledge on the environmental sanitation. Similarly, the representative from the Drinking water and Sanitation Division Office also visited the exhibition and praised local effort.

  Global Hand washing day celebrated in Machhegaun

Hand washing demonstration campaign was organized in two different schools; Shree Narayan Jan High School and Shree ChunDevi Primary School of Machhegaun VDC with the joint initiation of Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) and Machhegaun Environment Improvement Committee on 15th October 2009. Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) supported and actively participated in the campaign. Despite the busy schedule students and teachers participation was overwhelming. The programme started with the sharing of importance of Global hand washing day campaign programme. FCHVs demonstrated the hand washing technique such that the students get to know the exact way of washing hands using soap. Students then applied themselves in washing hands as demonstrated. Promotional materials such as soap, towel and soap case were presented to the school. Students found this programme exciting and educational and were happy to have such programme in their school premises.
