Children Exposure Visit; National Museum and Swoyambhu


Children Learning Centre (CLC) under Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD), whose main endeavor is to help the children utilizing their free time, improving their knowledge and skills. The main targeted groups are urban poor children. Each year CLC has been organizing exposure visits to their children. This year also exposure visits was organized on 13th June 2009 at National Museum, Chhauni and Swoyambhunath. There were altogether 14 participants from CLC and four staffs from CIUD to guide the children.

The main aim of the exposure visit is to gain some additional knowledge and also to refresh them from the studies burden. In this visit the children actively observed historical monuments, sculptures, idols, paintings etc of our country. In the second half of visit children enjoyed the scenic beauty of Kathmandu valley.

  Children Health Camp on World Environment Day


Children Learning Centre under Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) organized free Children Health Camp on World Environment Day, 5th June 2009 in the premises of the organization. Altogether 61 children of the Gusingal, Lalitpur from the rental poor community get benefited from the camp. Dr. Susan Karki voluntarily participated in the Health Camp as well as Micro Lab Limited, Quest Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd and Omnica Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. provided some medicine for the Health Camp.

  Sithi Nakha celebrated by the locals


On the occasion of Sithi Nakha; a cultural ritual devoted to water and sanitation on 29th May 2009, seven newly renovated kuwas in Machhegaun; Adhikari tole kuwa, Chop Khola Kuwa, Satya Narayan Kuwa, Mathilo Kangal Kuwa, Sakwa Hiti kuwa, Chatrapal Bhairab Kuwa and Dhu Gaun Kuwa were handed over to the local committee by Chinta Mani Acharya, VDC secretary of the village. The Kuwas were handed over to the local water user committee in a special programme in the presence of representatives from Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD) and Water Aid Nepal (WAN). VDC secretary informed that the use and maintenance of the kuwa will be carried out by the water user committees in the upcoming days. Laxman Adhikari, one of the water user committee representative shared his views and thanked CIUD and WAN for hand over of the renovated kuwa to their community.
Centre for Integrated Urban Development, Water Aid Nepal and Machhegaun Environment Improvement Committee has been working in joint venture to improve water and sanitation facilities in Machhegaun. Mr. Bishnu Narayan Manandhar, president of Machhegaun Environment Improvement Committee expressed his view regarding water and sanitation activities in the village. Mr. Padma Sunder Joshi, Executive Director, CIUD expressed his views on the historic importance of Sithi Nakha; Mr. Kabir Das Rajbhandari, Programme Manager (Urban), representative from WAN also shared his views regarding the ethnic ritual. Meanwhile a village cleaning campaign was also carried out in which thousands of local people from the village, women health volunteers, police, New Horizon Academy; Narayan Jan High School participated enthusiastically. The Sithi Nakha programme was also celebrated in Gamcha, kirtipur-7 and Lubhoo VDC, Lalitpur.

  Training programme on Stone spout & potential of Rain water Harvesting in Lalitpur


Training programme on Stone spout and potential of Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) in Lalitpur was jointly organized by Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD), Lalitpur Sub Metropolitan City (LSMC) and UNHABITAT at Lalitpur which was conducted on 17th & 20th May 2009 with altogether 78 participants.
These Two days training was aimed to train technicians, municipal political representatives and ward level staff. Mr. Binod Prakash Singh, Chief Executive officer of LSMC, Mr. Bharat Prashad Sharma, Chairman of CIUD and Ms. Anjali Manandhar Sherpa, WATSAN coordinator from UNHABITAT attended the programme.
The training was divided into three parts. Mr. Padma Sunder Joshi gave indepth information on traditional water management system of Kathmandu valley. He explained how the old system works through canals, ponds and stone spouts and its management system. He also elaborated present condition and possible improvement activities required to conserve the system. Dr. Suresh Das Shrestha from Tribhuvan University trained on rain water harvesting potential of Lalitpur especially in reference to given geological formation of the city. Likewise, Mr. Jyoti Bhushan Pradhan trained the participants on techniques and methods of rain water harvesting.
